Leading a peasant revolt in Battle Brothers: Percentage 1

This diary first appeared in Microcomputer Gamer magazine issue 353 in January 2021. We do ace every calendar month, taking on new challenges and approaching our favourite games from alone new angles – and letting you recognize how we got on.

The Darklands. A state of war-marked godforsaken where everything preys upon the people: orcs, goblins, bandits, corpse-eaters, barbarians, giants, great beasts from direwolf to lindwurm, hell, even the doomed total rearmost for us. But the worst monster? The predator that kills more of the peasants than any other? It's a Brobdingnagian parasite, a in flood tick growing fatter off the backsweat of the park humankind: the nobility.

They lifted us up for one of their wars, their endless wars, and they said it was to protect our town. 30 of us volunteered, but they Federal Reserve System us into the trap of battle and only twelve came verboten live. The worst part? There were sporting as umpteen scared, unhappy peasants along the other side. The only people who wanted to constitute there sidesplitting each other were the nobles.

Fuck the nobles. Me and these 12 men aren't keep aside their rules anymore. We'ray bloody-minded northerners, people of the townspeople of Bokenberg. A speck on the tumbling tundra. Our forefathers laboured in the salt pits before the nobles were here and we'll be here long after the entire House of Rumholt is mouldering in their, avowedly expensive, tombs.

We're a tik militia now, but we'll before long be mercenaries. Eventually the Darklands Peoples' Front will put scourge in the Black Maria of the nobility. Common populate fighting for the folk. We'll have no more trade with the nobles, and no nobles among us. And if we get severe enough to take from the nobles, hell, we'll serve that too. We may atomic number 4 uneducated, we mightiness not have tomes of lore about the world you said it it works, but that won't hinder us. Actually, that probably will impede America a dispense.

I pull off up our lease and we agree on everything in Bokenberg. I'm in charge because I'm smartest, and I set everything that isn't fighting. On that point are 12 others. Then there's the dying two members of the old town militia: Alwin the axeman, strong as a horse, and Gebhard, a ripe spearman. Oh, and Reinhold, the town minstrel. We all thought he was a coward, simply he didn't run away in the war. Good for us.

Prole call

The labourers and the jongleur and the fisher don't even get weapons, so we spend some of what little money we induce on a few bludgeons at the commercialize. We spend a penny Reinhold sling a bow across his back along with his lute. Bjarne, the township's elected steward, asks us to do our first job, protecting the trade caravan heading a day's travel south. I ask for a flake of extra money advanced so we can make payroll on the trip out down.

After a long, uneventful abut we pass wate it to Waidtal, a town crosswise mountains from the northern tundra, betwixt the temple timber and the brittle branch woods. IT's in the district of other nobles, House Rosenving. Their soldiers habiliment shiny armour and colourful uniforms, but there are beggars in the streets.

One of the bandits—WHO has a real sword, shield, armour—steps up to Alwin the axeman and takes his head unsatisfactory in a stroke. Ruthard tries to help and another brigand disembowels him. Alwin's admirer Gehbard, prosperous, puts both bandits down one after the unusual with some deft spear-thrusts to the neck and chest.

After the competitiveness we realise that we could have taken weapons and shields cancelled the enemy dead mid- battle. Probably would have helped those of us fighting with farm implements and nothing a great deal else. We trek back to Waidtal and collect our reward. None of U.S. buns scan, but a few can count to a cardinal. We count out every coin twice.

A trader is headed back north, stopping at the big urban center of Bolasted, just a half-day from menage in Bokenberg. We'd like to see family again. We sign up to guard him. It's a suspicious speculate though. He's self-assured and offering too little money. He wants to leave township before dayspring.

Before we leave, we Tell Leif helium's a real blooded mercenary now. We give him Alwin's equipoised axe and make him shave his godawful head. We hire an impoverished seamster named Reimar to join the company. He has soft hands, only brought his personal dagger. Helium's soundless the butt of most of the jokes at the nighttime's campfire.

Peasantville

The van gets ambushed the second we leave survey of town. Like I said, suspicious deal. It's a night attack and we've got no idea who's coming or how many. Reinhold stairs frontward to grow a good look at the enemy's disposition and is rapidly engaged. Information technology's at this point that we understand Reinhold isn't carrying anything but his fore, his quiver, and his luting. He's got no way to hold himself. Helium manages to slip out of scrimmage and Niels rushes between him and two bandits. It's the last thing Niels ever does.

In the centre Sorrel the miller, freshly armed with an axe we took off the other bandits, manages to cut down two enemies in quick successiveness with strikes to the head. Lop, lop, two dead bandits. The tailor-make jumps on another, and equal threading a needle, slips his dagger right into the brigand's eye. We will non laugh at the Reimar the Tailor anymore, he's earned our honor.

Meanwhile, Gebhard and Wolfgang manage to peel a bandit off of Reinhold. That leaves rightful one brigand with a shield and club. In the dark we can't tell if he's wearing away a helmet or is just a mass of beard and filthy hair's-breadth. Desperate, Reinhold pulls his lute and takes a dangle: helium brains the bandit, stunning him. There's a snap and crack. The stunned bandit drops dead with a fractured skull. Leonhard has hit something for the first time anyone can remember. He seems even as surprised As everyone else.

We make it back north without encourage parenthetical, only it's starting to feel like the peasants have so many problems that we'll ne'er father around to solving them all. An peculiar man who makes maps hires us to go watch the temple forest for a place called 'The Grim Tombs'. We find them, observe from a innocuous distance, and move on. It's a bad sounding place, an antediluvian ruin and a tomb to iron heel. Leonhard says he's seen places like it before. His father same they're ruins from the old empire 500 age ago. Anyhow, easiest 500 crowns we've ever made. We put it behind us. If only we'd glorious not to go back on that point. But I get far, far ahead of myself.

Flush with wealth we make Fritz the Butcher kick in prepared his cleaver for a seemly heavy falchion. He says it's lucky and pouts, but gives in. Later he gets inebriated and 'loses' the new sword and we give him a month of latrine duty for it.

Homeward bound

Making our way back home to Bokenberg we spot smoke in the aloofness. Some barbarian reavers burned a goat farm and the headman offers United States of America coin to go go up their camp in return. East across the tundra we find their camp, restrained by their thralls. They expression absurd charging at us, hats made from bear heads, nine-spring cleavers made of sharpened antler. It's not funny when one takes Sorrel the Henry Valentine Miller's manoeuver clean off his shoulders, Beaver State when another puts a spear straight through Reimar. Such for the promising tailor, we'd just started liking him!

Leonhard does manage to land a few stones during the combat, which we later jest at makes sense since he's used to shooting at animals. For all that the barbarians looked derisory they do have a good bit of worthwhile loot. Leonhard trades in his sling for a bundle of javelins. After these last few fights a heap of the hands have gotten experience and new skills, and the income means cipher has an improvised weapon anymore. Zero more bucklers, no longer pitchforks. Real spears, real shields. Gods, this stuff is expensive. Who can invite out these weapons? Oh, true. Those sodding nobles.

Aside the time we're book binding Bokenberg has some other problem: monsters. Something grabbed all the sheep and one of the shepherds. Could be bandits, could be a mountain giant—an unhold. We don't roll in the hay. But we hire some new kids before we leave town. Farmhands, all. They look so young.

Aft a day's trek into the mountains, the monsters turn out to be direwolves. They're immense, just there are only four of them. How bad could information technology be? Really bad, it turns tabu. Leif goes down immediately, his long axe-shaft proving to be little protection against 400 pounds of muscle, pelt and razor-sharp claws. Same of the new kids, Gero, takes a look at that and runs. Leonhard the poacher, in his element fight beasts, hits every javelin pellet, taking set ii wolves spell the others deflect them. Thilmann, stolid and quiet in his wide farmhand's hat, keeps his buckler up as a wolf slams into it again and again. Leonhard flanks around and puts two javelins into first unrivalled wolf, and then another.

As the new kids are stripping the hides from the wolf corpses we realise that Leif is still alive subordinate a wolf carcass. The beast ripped his nose complete off. His gut is punctured with a not bad arc of claw-holes. He's uglier now, but He's alive. We have only enough medicine to keep there until we get ourselves back out to Bokenberg.

We collect our coins, though it's not decent to make for what we worn-out. Seems self-evident nowadays, but when you only go for the lowborn you get paid lowborn wages.

We make up one's mind to head back south before winter sets in. The further we go from our home greensward the amend chance we have of finding nobles to loot who can't incinerate Bokenberg in retrovert. We barter the woman chaser gist for a send away of grain, buy a partner off sacks of salt for trading, and hit the tavern ahead we depart. Rumour has IT that Waidtal has a giant wanderer trouble. We'll stop there happening our way to sunnier climes...
